The Engagement

The Bread & Roses Theatre Clapham

Written by: James Alexander Allen
Directed by: Laura Dorn

The only Experimentorium production that wasn’t devised by the company, “The Engagement” is based on a true story that was dramatised by James Alexander Allen. The play centres around its lead character’s struggle with alcoholism and the profound effects that has on her two closest relationships - her partner and her sister.

For this play, Experimentorium partnered with Alcohol Change UK, a charity founded in 1984 that originated the Dry January challenge. The show featured a post-performance Q&A between leading professionals, recovering alcoholics, the cast and creatives of the play and the audience in an open discussion about the stigma surrounding alcoholism and addiction.

This production was supported by the Carne Trust, received several 5-star reviews and was recognised with an Off-Com commendation.
